01.who we are
this policy describes how the date pac, llc (operating as "the running dates") collects, uses, and shares personal information from visitors to therunningdates.com and participants in our programs. we are based in los angeles, california.
02.what we collect
different things, depending on what you do on the site:
when you join the waitlist:
- email address
- mobile phone number (if provided + sms consent given)
- signup timestamp + which form you used (hero or final cta)
when you submit the matching form:
- first name, email, city
- running pace + long-run distance
- age range (categorical, not exact)
- gender identity
- matching vibe + (if applicable) dating preferences
when you apply to be a captain:
- full name, email, city, instagram handle
- your written application narrative
automatically when you visit the site:
- pages visited, time on page, referring url, device type, browser, anonymized ip address
- any cookies set by our analytics or hosting provider (vercel)
we do not collect: ssn, financial data, biometrics, location history, contact lists, or anything else not listed above.
03.how we use it
- email & sms communications — drop alerts, matching invitations, captain decisions, transactional confirmations
- matching — pairing participants by city, pace, vibe (see matching policy)
- captain review — manually evaluating ambassador applications
- analytics — understanding which pages convert, which traffic sources work
- safety — investigating reports, removing bad actors, protecting the community
we do not use your data for personalized advertising, profiling, or to train any ai/ml model.
04.service providers we share with
we share data only with platforms we use to operate the business. they're contractually bound to keep your data secure and use it only for our purposes:
- klaviyo — email + sms platform. holds your email, phone, name, and matching properties. klaviyo privacy policy
- vercel — website hosting. holds anonymized analytics + serverless function logs. vercel privacy policy
- shopify (when commerce launches) — order processing + shipping. holds payment info via stripe
- captains — see § 06 of the matching policy for the exact fields shared with city captains
05.we never sell or share your data — "do not sell or share"
no advertising networks, no data brokers, no email list resellers. we have no interest in monetizing your personal info beyond running this brand.
california residents: we have not sold or shared (as those terms are defined under the california consumer privacy act and california privacy rights act) any personal information in the past 12 months. we do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising.
because we do not sell or share, you do not need to submit a "do not sell or share my personal information" request — but if you'd like written confirmation of our policy, email therunningdates@gmail.com with subject line "ccpa confirmation request."
05b.sensitive personal information
under the california privacy rights act (cpra), the following categories of data we collect are considered sensitive personal information:
- gender identity — collected on the matching form
- sexual orientation / dating preferences — collected on the matching form only when "actual first date" is selected
- government-issued id — viewed (not stored) once at first meetup verification
- precise geolocation — we do not collect this
- biometric data, race, religion, immigration status, union membership, mail/email contents — we do not collect any of these
we use sensitive personal information only for matching and safety verification. we do not use it for inferring characteristics, profiling, or any purpose beyond what's described in this policy. you have the right to limit our use of sensitive personal information at any time — email us at therunningdates@gmail.com.
06.cookies & tracking
we use a minimal set of cookies:
- functional cookies — required for the site to work (e.g., remembering you've already submitted the form)
- analytics cookies — count visits and identify traffic sources. we use vercel analytics (cookie-less) by default; if we add google analytics or plausible, we'll list it here
we don't use third-party advertising cookies (meta pixel, google ads tag, etc.) on this site. if we ever do, this policy will be updated and you'll be notified.
07.data retention
- waitlist email/phone: until you unsubscribe or 24 months of inactivity, whichever comes first
- matching profile data: see matching policy § 08
- captain application: retained while you're an active captain, plus 24 months after your tenure ends
- analytics data: aggregated, retained indefinitely (no longer attributable to individuals)
08.your rights
everyone:
- request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- request correction of inaccurate data
- request deletion of your data (subject to safety/audit retention — see § 07)
- opt out of marketing emails (every email has an unsubscribe link)
- opt out of marketing sms (reply STOP to any text)
california residents (ccpa/cpra):
- right to know what categories of data we collect, sources, purposes, and recipients
- right to delete (with limited exceptions for safety/legal compliance)
- right to correct inaccurate information
- right to limit use of sensitive personal information (we don't use any sensitive PI for purposes you'd object to)
- right to non-discrimination for exercising your rights
eu/uk residents (gdpr):
we currently sell only in the us, but if you're an eu/uk resident on our list, we extend the same rights as ccpa plus the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
to exercise any right:
email therunningdates@gmail.com. we respond within 30 days. we may verify your identity by asking you to reply from the email associated with your account.
09.children's privacy
this site is not intended for children under 13. we don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. participation in the run club, matching, and captain program requires age 18+.
if you believe a child under 13 has submitted data to us, email therunningdates@gmail.com and we'll delete it.
10.security
we use industry-standard measures to protect your data: encryption in transit (https), encrypted databases at our service providers, restricted access, and minimal data collection. no system is 100% secure, but we treat your data like our own.
11.updates
we'll update this policy as the business grows. material changes are emailed to active waitlist participants 30 days before they take effect. the "last updated" date at the top is the canonical version date.
